When Halle Hizer developed a painful ear for two days in her week -long vacation, she put it down on wearing earphones during the flight.

But the student was actually bitten by a poisonous spider, and her idyllic Greek outing quickly turned into one ‘Horror Show’ that almost cost the 20-year-old her ear.

Mrs. Hizer and her grandmother flew from their houses in Enfield, Noord -Londen, to the island of Rhodes for seven days of Sun soaked R&R.

Only two days after the journey, Mrs. Hizer woke up with a swollen left ear, but assumed it was to wear her air polders during the flight.

She said: ‘I woke up and my ear was really swollen. At that time I didn’t think anything about it.

‘I just thought it was a matter of when you wore your air pods too long and it rubbed on my ear if it can sometimes hurt.

‘The next day it became bigger and bigger and started to get out and I didn’t think I had to go to a doctor or to the hospital.

“I thought I might have an ear infection.”

Mrs. Hizer, who now suspected that she was bitten by a mosquito, went to the local pharmacist who gave her some antibiotic cream.

However, it did not succeed in reducing the pain or swelling – the music theater student says that her ear has doubled in size and started to look like a ‘cauliflower’.

After a few days without improvement, and at the insistence of her grandmother, she sought the advice of a doctor.

She continued: ‘HE only one look and said, “You have a bad infection in your ear” and that’s it.

“He gave me antibiotics and I accepted them, but my ear didn’t get any better. It got worse. ‘

After he had flown back home on 6 June, Mrs. Hizer became ‘afraid that she would lose her ear’ after the pus started leaking and she started experiencing ‘stabbing’ pains.

For fear that it was about to be septic, she immediately went to the hospital where she was ‘shocked’ to hear the antibiotics that she was given in Greece, had not been used in medicine for years and had led to the infection.

Days later she was operated on to remove the abscess in her ear and doctors revealed that she was bitten by a spider, not a mosquito as she initially suspected.

She said: “When I underwent surgery, they realized that I was bitten by a spider. [The doctor] said, “On which antibiotics were you” and I showed him the package and he said, “That is so strange. We have not used this antibiotic in medicine for years because it has been proven that it no longer works.”

‘I was quite shocked because I spent £ 155 on a private doctor [in Greece] And he gave me antibiotics that were not even used in medicine anymore.

‘Because I had not received the right antibiotics, my ear was so infected so infected so that Pus came out that was in fact poison.

“My ear would leak every five minutes. The doctors told me that I would need surgery to remove the abscess.

‘That is when they realized to test it that it was not a mosquito, but it was a spider. You could see the bite traces from the back. ‘

Mrs. Hizer is not sure what Spider bite her, but it was perhaps a Mediterranean recluse spider, also known as a violin spider, who are responsible for some very similar – and equally filthy – bites.

The spiders are relatively small, with bodies less than 1 cm long, and have long spindle -like legs and poison that can cause redness and in extreme cases, necrosis.

She continued: ‘It was swollen from the back and the front that I did not realize at the time.

“If I were to be put on the right antibiotics in the beginning, it would simply have fallen off the infection immediately, but it got worse and worse.”

The student was in antibiotics for two weeks and had a connection around her head, but the swelling has fallen since then.

With other holidaymakers, she is now able to use insect repellent and read the cleanliness reviews of hotels, because she believes that that could have played a role.

Mrs. Hizer said: ‘My ear has become normal again and it is no longer huge. Much of the scab has now disappeared and have lost weight. It is still a bit tender, but granted because they cut my ear open.

‘I have a new fear of spiders, but I hope that because we are in the UK, I will not come across a spider of that nature, but who knows because I didn’t think I would come across that in Greece.

‘Make sure you have the rejection with you and make sure the hotel is clean because I feel that it has played a big factor in it. Me and my grandmother are sorry that I have not read the reviews. Just do your research before you go to places so that you are not disappointed.

‘We just went for a week to relax and it eventually became a horror show. I did not expect that I would find such spiders in Greece. ‘
