Wankhede Security Manager arrested for alleged theft of 261 IPL sweaters

A security manager in the iconic shaky stage of Mumbai has been arrested due to alleged stealing 261 Indian Premier League (IPL) Jerseys worth inr 6.52 Lakh from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) the official Merchandise shop of India. The accused, the 43-year-old Farooque Aslam Khan, a resident of Mira Road, was recently arrested and is currently on bail, according to the police.

The theft took place on June 13, 2025, when Khan reportedly ended the storage room of the BCCI in Wankhede with a large box with the sweaters. These were IPL 2025 Jerseys, each appreciated around Inr 2500. The crime was unnoticed until a routine inventory and audit in July revealed tanding discrepancies. When revising CCTV images, BCCI officials Khan saw the box, suspected and led to a formal police complaint on July 17 at the Marine Drive police station.

According to police sources, Khan has sold many of the stolen sweaters online to a dealer in Haryana. Research showed that he contacted the dealer via social media and claimed that the items were sold as part of a share statement as a result of renovation work in the BCCI building.

The suspect has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Code of Criminal Law

The police have found 50 of the 261 stolen sweaters from Khan’s possession. While interrogating, Khan admitted to use the proceeds of the sale to finance his online gambling addiction. The funds were transferred directly to his bank account.

The dealer from Haryana, who bought the sweaters, told the police that he did not know that the merchandise had been stolen. He has been called for further interrogation. In the meantime, the authorities are still investigating whether the stolen articles were intended for IPL players or public sale via the official merchandise channels of BCCI.

Khan has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Criminal Code with regard to theft and criminal breach of trust. The case has also yielded the concern about the internal safety and audit mechanisms at locations such as Wankhede.
