Waldo Cortes-Acosta has spoken out about a possible rematch between Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane. Aspinall was then promoted from interim to undisputed heavyweight champion Jon Jones retire early this year.
The Brit entered octagon to defend his lead against Gane at UFC 321. Despite being the underdog that night, ‘Bon Gamin’ turned the odds in his favor with a strong start. However, the fight had to be stopped after Aspinall was stabbed in the eye. After the five-minute recovery time, Aspinall was unable to recover and decided not to continue, after which the fight was declared a no-contest, with Aspinall retaining his belt.
Waldo Cortes-Acosta believes that ‘Bon Gamin’ will win if the two feed it back. During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, he said:
“I think Tom is a little concerned about Ciryl Gane. In this fight he looked great and looked on a different level than Aspinall. The jab connected really well. I think Tom Aspinall tasted blood too early in the round. I think he was pushing to not try to fight anymore after the eye poke.”

Waldo Cortes-Acosta wants to fight Derrick Lewis in 2026
Waldo Cortes-Acosta, who is currently the No. 5 ranked heavyweight, has won four of his five fights entering 2025. Earlier this month, he knocked out Ante Delija and then took on Shamil Gaziev on short notice at UFC Qatar, where he also knocked out Gaziev in the first round.
After scoring back-to-back wins in the same month, he requested a fight next month on December 13. However, that doesn’t seem to be on the menu, as ‘Salsa Boy’ Ariel Helwani said. However, the 34-year-old hopes to fight at UFC 324 early next year, when the promotion kicks off a new era on Paramount Plus. Cortes-Acosta, has Derrick Lewis in his mind as a potential opponent. About the same thing he said to Helwani:
‘I think it might be possible [to fight on the Jan. 24th card]. I think it’s confirmed, maybe they have something for January 24th… Against Derrick Lewis or someone else… I love it.”
