Williams Team Principal James Vowles is willing to lose fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship of Formula 1 after stopping the development of his current car because of a long -term focus on trying to fight for titles again in the future.
In the first part of the season Williams often fought for points with both cars, he registered three top five Finishes and enjoys a series of four consecutive double points results from Jeddah to Monaco to generally sit in fifth place. However, the advantage of Aston Martin, Sauber and Racing Bulls has been cut in recent rounds, with 25 points over all four teams, but despite these twists, an upgrade that was introduced in Belgium The latest development work will take place for the 2025 car.
“Everything is switched off,” said Vowles. “It’s already done. It has been decided. And that was done in accordance with the shareholders.
“I really enjoy the fact that we are fifth this year – I think it is a fantastic element for ourselves, for our partners, for everyone who is associated with us – but the purpose of this team is to win world championships. And you just don’t do that by continuing to fight for a position or two in a constructors.
“So that decision was made in January. And the path we go on, this [Belgium] Update we did, it was not even guaranteed that we would do it. It was the element of a few pieces that we did in the tunnel in January, February and a bit in March. That’s it.
“We don’t do anything anymore. I will not do anything anymore. And if that means that we are sixth in the championship or the seventh, it is so.”
Vowles says he is not surprised that Williams is currently in fifth place in the rankings, despite limiting the work that it would do when developing this year’s car, pointing in the way the team used his early performance levels.
“I certainly think about our season this year and we had elements where we delivered,” he said. “And when we have delivered, it is due to a number of iterations of cars for us. The car that goes into the year, if you ask me, I would say that it will be a very narrow battle between P5 to probably P8, of which I think it is their reflection.
“And I think if you look at our performance at Imola and Miami, you would say: ‘Yes, the car is [strong]We are fifth, fourth, because we are collecting good results. We don’t make any mistakes with it, but the field is very compact. ‘
“In Imola and Miami, I think it is a bit surprising the world about how far we could push this car and develop this car. Then the development race kicked in and others added performance, added performance, performance added. In that respect, Ferrari did a brilliant task in that respect. And it was our update in Spa that brought us back in Spa.
“I am not surprised that we are the fifth. I think every team could have had the lucky results on the way.
“So I am not surprised. I think it is still a long season to go. I was more surprised at Imola and Miami that we were as fast as we were. That is probably why we are fifth.”
