Wagons used to be everywhere, but in recent decades they have become something of a joke – at least for those not erudite enough to worship the cult of the brown, manual diesel wagon. Their reputation became so bad that even Volvo, makers of the most beautiful station wagons in the world, left the segment completely and announced the end of production of the V60 and V90. Now, however, it seems like things are starting to happen.
Volvo thinks station wagons are cool again and does not rule out that more will come onto the market. The drive spoke to Michael Fleiss, Volvo’s Chief Strategy and Product Officer, who said the wagon segment was heating up – or, in his own words, that the segment is now ‘hot sh*t’. He claimed that the car market is in a very different place than it was a decade ago, and that station wagons may have the chance to finally make their long-awaited triumphant return.
More wagons from Volvo
Don’t expect Volvo to launch a whole range of wagons in 2026, but it’s possible the company will release some new electric long-roofs in the coming years. If so, we might be lucky enough to even get a Polestar variant eventually. Sure, the companies are technically different, but we all know there’s a serious connection between the two. It may be neither diesel nor manual, but I would certainly be excited about a torquey, fully electric car in Swedish Racing Green.
