Vodafone Idea was hit with several tax penalties during the festive season

Vodafone Idea Ltd (Vi) on December 25 announced GST demands worth ₹79 crore and ₹3.5 crore, respectively, issued by the Maharashtra state tax department and the Bengaluru office of the chief commissioner of CGST.

On Christmas Eve, Mumbai’s Deputy Commissioner of State Tax and Chief Commissioner of Central Goods and Services Tax Commissioner of Bengaluru imposed fines on the telco under Section 74 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.

The Maharashtra state tax department issued a penalty notice of ₹79.56 crore, which the company cited as an alleged demand for additional licensing fees and spectrum usage charges for the financial year 2018 – 2019.

Meanwhile, the Bengaluru office of the Chief Commissioner of CGST has issued a penalty notice of ₹3.58 crore for short payment of tax and excess claim of input tax credit (ITC) during the financial year 2018-2019 to the financial year 2022-2023.

In response to both these fines, Vi said: “The company disagrees with the orders and will take appropriate action(s) to correct/reverse the same.”

The news follows a fresh fine of ₹4.15 crore imposed by the West Bengal tax department on December 22. This order also alleges excess claim of ITC and payment of tax under wrong head. Vi had responded by stating that the company will take appropriate action(s) to address the order.

Shares of Vi stood at ₹12.02 on Thursday.
