Virender Sehwag has never been anyone who cut words, whether it is on the field or off. Years after he had hung his boots, the former Indian opener has now visited one of the ugliest dressing room battles of his career, one that at the then coach of Greg Chappell during the restless Mid -2000S.
The collision, Sehwag unveiled on the Life Saver Podcast, came during a difficult phase for Indian cricket. Chappell had taken the lead with great expectations in 2005, but his persistent approach quickly finished the dressing room. Sourv Ganguly lost the Captainincy, senior pros felt alienated and friction became the norm.
For Sehwag, the breaking point came when Chappell questioned his Batting technique and even threatened to drop him.
“Greg told me that I would not survive in international cricket unless I moved my feet. I reminded him that I had already scored more than 6000 tests on an average above 50. He didn’t care and kept repeating the same line. Then things became ugly.
The words war fell on the field in the next game. Chappell again warned him that his place was in danger if he failed. Sehwag answered in the best possible way, with the bat. Against West -India he insisted the bowlers to all corners, ran to 99 for lunch and ended with a sizzling 184.
When he returned to the dressing room, his anger had not cooled down
“I told Dravid:” Say your coach not to get close. “Later I immediately looked at Chappell and said:” No matter if I move my feet or not, I know how to score runs, “said Sehwag.
The episode is just another memory of how division the Greg Chappell era was. Indian Cricket was constant unrest between 2005 and 2007.
From Sachin Tendulkar who is pushed to No. 4, to the failed promotion of Irfan Pathan as an all -rounder, to Ganguly’s expulsion as a captain, the dressing room never settled. Seniors were frustrated, young people were caught in the middle and the results reflected the chaos.
