Virat Kohli returns home while Chinnaswamy reopens
Indian batting icon Virat Kohli returns to domestic cricket, and conditions are favorable for him to take part in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy in Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The development comes after the Karnataka government granted conditional approval to the iconic venue, paving the way for the resumption of cricket activities after months of uncertainty. So let’s know about Virat Kohli’s domestic return.
Chinnaswamy Stadium evacuated due to security concerns
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was off the cricket calendar after a tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations in June that left 11 people dead. An inquest led by Judge John D’Cunha Commission subsequently declared the stadium unsafe for hosting large gatherings, causing Bengaluru to lose several important matches, including matches scheduled for the Women’s World Cup.
The Karnataka cabinet gives conditional nod
In a major turnaround, the Karnataka Cabinet recently gave in-principle approval for cricket to return to the venue. The approval is subject to the condition that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) strictly implements the enhanced safety, security and crowd management measures recommended by the committee. Newly elected KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad held talks with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and senior officials to facilitate the reopening of the stadium.
Kohli is likely to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy
One of the immediate consequences of the approval could be… Virat Kohli’s presence in Chinnaswamy in homely colours. Due to logistical and security issues at Alur, the KSCA is considering shifting the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches in Delhi to Bengaluru. Kohli has been included in Delhi’s likely squad along with Rishabh Pant and is expected to be available for the first three matches of the tournament.
Delhi are scheduled to meet Andhra and Gujarat at the venue, potentially marking Kohli’s return to the field where he has enjoyed huge success in the IPL with RCB.
Limited access for spectators planned
To manage the expected interest from fans, the KSCA is considering allowing a limited audience of approximately 2,000 to 3,000 spectators by opening selected stands in the stadium. This phased approach aims to balance public enthusiasm with safety protocols.
BCCI guideline encourages domestic participation
Kohli’s availability is in line with the BCCI’s directive that centrally contracted players should participate in domestic tournaments when international commitments permit. Fresh from a Player of the Series performance in India’s ODI series win against South Africa, Kohli is expected to significantly strengthen Delhi’s batting line-up. Meanwhile, Pant will be keen to get in match practice after missing recent ODI appearances.
