In a historical recasting of the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankingsan Indian legend Virat Kohli reclaimed the world’s top spot on January 14, marking his eleventh time at the top. The update follows a clinical performance in the opening match of the ongoing series against New Zealand in Vadodara, where the 37-year-old’s masterclass led the hosts to an impressive win.

Kohli has officially stormed back to the number 1 position in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, displacing teammate Rohit Sharma after India’s four-wicket win over New Zealand. Kohli’s match-winning 93 off 91 balls helped the hosts successfully chase down a target of 300 in Vadodara, marking his first return to the top spot since July 2021. The veteran is currently enjoying a purple patch with scores of 74, 135, 102, 65 and 93 in his last five outings. After reaching No. 1 for the first time in October 2013, Kohli has now spent a total of 825 days at the top, the most by any Indian and the tenth highest in the history of the game, with legends like Viv Richards And Brian Lara.

Test and T20I shuffles: Travis Head, Wanindu Hasaranga and Sikandar Raza win big

The January 14 update also took into account the conclusion of the Ashes and recent T20I performances, leading to massive shifts in the Test and T20I tables.

  • Test rankings: Australia Travis Head was the biggest gainer, rising seven places to third in the world after finishing as the leading run-scorer in the Ashes with 629 runs at an average of 62.90. Young English batsman Jacob Bethel also rose 25 places to 52nd after his first Test ton, while Australia’s Beau Webster saw a rise in all three divisions, jumping to 26th in the all-rounder rankings.
  • ODI Rankings: New Zealand Daryl Mitchell climbed to a career-high rating after his 84 in Vadodara, just one rating point behind Kohli. On the bowling front Mohammed Siraj rose five places to 15th, and Kyle Jamieson jumped 27 places to 69th after his career-best four wickets.
  • T20I Rankings: That of Sri Lanka Wanindu Hasaranga rose three places to second in the bowling rankings, while Pakistan pacer Salman Mirza climbed 16 places to 19th. Zimbabwe is in the all-rounders list Sikandar Raza regained the number 1 ranking as Saim Ayub dropped one position.
