Liverpool Under-19s are in action this lunchtime in the UEFA Youth League against their Eintracht Frankfurt counterparts in Germany, and a Reds youngster has done no harm to his prodigious reputation in the first half.
The opening 45 minutes produced six goals in a rollercoaster affair, with the home side striking first before the visitors recovered to go 2-1 up, then fell behind again to equalize again.
The tournament can provide the perfect platform for emerging stars to make their case for inclusion in the first team, and one member of Rob Page’s team certainly did that today.
Kieran Morrison lights up Liverpool’s Youth League match
Liverpool restored parity in the 17th minute when Kieran Morrison came in from the right flank and delivered a majestic through ball to Trent Kone-Doherty, who took a sharp touch to control the pass before drilling a shot past Eintracht goalkeeper Amil Siljevic.
Lewis Bower, reporting independently from the LFC academy, rightly described the assist as a ‘moment of magic’ on X.
Five minutes later the Reds went in front when the youngster who scored the equalizer began a dazzling dribble down the wing before firing the ball across the penalty area, and Keyrol Figueroa looked to put the finishing touches on putting the ball into the net.
Could Morrison get a senior Liverpool debut in the near future?
Both of Morrison’s assists were nothing short of sublime and he led Eintracht’s defense with a happy dance during a frenzied first half.
The Northern Ireland Under-21 gem is yet to make his official senior debut for Liverpool, although he has been training with the first team in recent weeks and followers of the Reds’ underage scene will already be more than familiar with the 18-year-old’s young talents.
This time last year he scored a sensational under-19s goal in the UEFA Youth League defeat to RB Leipzig, and he is already scored five goals and set up another five in 33 appearances at under-21 level.
Morrison will have already seen Rio Ngumoha – almost two years his junior – make an impact for the seniors on the left wing, and he hopes to get the chance to do the same on the other flank for Arne Slot’s team in the coming months.
With the squad change looking inevitable for next Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace, could that be the night the Manchester-born teenager makes his first-team debut? He certainly makes the best possible case for that today!
