The controversy unfolded as soon as the proceedings of the Bihar Legislative Council began. Led by Rabri Devi, women members of the RJD raised slogans on law and order issues in the House.
After the opposition’s protest, Nitish Kumar lost his cool and said in the House of Representatives, “Did these people, when they were in power earlier, do any work? This is all useless and nonsense.”
Referring to Rabri Devi, the Chief Minister said, “She is making too much noise,” and asked the Speaker to take action against those who disrupted the proceedings.
The verbal exchange escalated into a heated argument between Nitish Kumar and Rabri Devi. The Chief Minister also noted that Rabri Devi was appointed Chief Minister after Lalu Prasad Yadav stepped aside.
Opposition parties called the comment inappropriate, unparliamentary and insulting to women. RJD leaders Rohini Acharya and Tejashwi Yadav strongly objected to the Chief Minister’s statement and expressed their anger on social media.
Rohini Acharya, daughter of Rabri Devi, accused the chief minister of repeatedly overstepping the boundaries of parliamentary language, especially when it came to women.
The Honorable Prime Minister has made a habit of violating parliamentary linguistic decorum. Dozens of times he has used indecent language in the House of Representatives and on public platforms, especially in relation to women,” she wrote.
She said that when arguments and facts fall short, the Prime Minister crosses the boundaries of language to express frustration and ideological hollowness.
Referring to Nitish Kumar’s previous statements, Rohini Acharya added, “His statements over the last few years clearly show that he is suffering from mental and ideological frustration towards women. His talk about women’s respect is just political and electoral showmanship.”
Former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav also launched a direct attack on Nitish Kumar, calling the comment a reflection of a narrow-minded mentality towards women.
“When the impact of dementia and Alzheimer’s increases, a person falls into a mentally unstable state where one can only wish for their mental well-being,” Tejashwi said in a social media post.
Questioning the comment, he asked, “What would you call a chief minister who addresses the first woman chief minister of the state as a ‘girl’ and repeatedly shows a narrow-minded, negative and flawed mentality towards women?”
He further linked the comment to the law and order situation in the state and claimed, “Due to this mentality of the Chief Minister, hundreds of cases of rape of girls, students and women are being reported every day in Bihar.”
