Mo Salah has become only the third man in Liverpool FC’s 133-year history to score 250 goals for the club, reaching that rarefied milestone in tonight’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa.
The goal that took him over that threshold wasn’t exactly a Puskas candidate, with the Egyptian having the opportunity to score past Emiliano Martinez after a failed pass from the Argentine goalkeeper.
Yet that does not detract from the 33-year-old’s phenomenal achievement in achieving a milestone that Anfield greats such as Billy Liddell, Robbie Fowler, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Ian St John could not achieve.
Gerrard and Salah share a heartwarming moment
Shortly after the final whistle, Salah was greeted by another all-time Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, who was on duty with TNT Sports.
Our former captain greeted the Reds’ number 11 with a warm hug and a congratulatory handshake in recognition of his 250-goal achievement, with Steve McManaman also taking a moment to celebrate with the Egyptian king.
Salah is gradually returning to form for Liverpool
Salah has come under some scathing criticism in recent weeks after a six-game goalless spell and some uncharacteristically subdued performances, but he has now scored in two consecutive games for Liverpool and looked much more like his world-class self tonight.
He gave Lucas Digne a torrid time on the wing and was rated 8/10 by the Liverpool echo’s Ian Doyle, along with winning seven matches, completing four dribbles and executing one key pass (Bank score).
He may have got his goal through Martinez’s mistake, but it still took opportunism and composure from the Egyptian to seize the chance, and it was a moment that showed why he joins Ian Rush and Roger Hunt as the only three men scored 250 goals for LFC.
As Salah rediscovers his scoring style, hopefully he can keep it up with crucial contributions against Real Madrid and Manchester City ahead of this month’s international break!
