Veteran defender Tyson Barrie announces retirement of the NHL – The Hockey Writers NHL News Latest News, Analysis and more

Earlier today the news came out that Tyson Barrie announced his retirement of the NHL. The news came for the first time in a video of DNVR Avalanche on X Then Barrie shared it himself.

From there, the word spread quickly and became official. At the age of 34, Barrie returns from the NHL. Not long after, the competition placed over his retirement.

Looking back on Barrie’s career

Barrie was once considered one of the best Puck-Moving defenders of the competition. When he broke into the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche in the 2011-12 season, he showed really potential as a Power Play specialist. Of course, players such as Mikko Rantanen and Nathan Mackinnon helped, but Barrie had the vision and the passing ability to make the best of it. During eight seasons with the Avalanche he played 484 games and set 75 goals and 232 assists for 307 points.

After his time in Colorado, he was in the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Notorious Nazem Kadri -Trade in 2019. He only spent one season in Toronto, appeared in 70 games and placed five goals and 34 assists for 39 points. From there he signed with the Edmonton Oilers, where he flourished again as a Power Play specialist next to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. In 190 games with the oilers, he scored 25 goals and 107 assists for 132 points.

Barrie’s Run in Edmonton came to an end when he was Traded to the Nashville Predators During the 2022-23 season. His production fell, although he still had four goals and 23 assists for 27 points in 65 games. His last NHL Stop came with the Calgary Flames last season, where he appeared in 13 games and recorded one goal and two assists for three points.

Now that his career is officially over, Barrie is leaving the game with 822 NHL games played, 110 goals, 398 assists and 508 points.
