Verizon Pushes Surprising New Loyalty Discounts With “No Catch”

With a new CEO at the helm after a period of losing wireless subscribers, don’t be surprised if Verizon immediately moves to close out the year as it tries to turn things around. We may see some of these moves in action just a few weeks after Dan Schulman took over. Verizon is sending a series of loyalty discounts to customers, saying there’s “no catch” and all they have to do is log into their account to claim them.

This is almost unheard of at Verizon. You probably remember that in August they told all their most loyal customers that they were taking away their loyalty discounts and suggested the reason had to do with continuing to improve their network. It was a classic line used by American wireless carriers when they want you to pay more for your current plan or try to force you from an older plan to a newer, often more expensive plan.

And now here we are, a few months later, with a new CEO and Verizon has started sending out loyalty discount emails, unsolicited. At least one of our readers has sent an email stating that there are “no strings attached” and that “there’s no catch. Seriously.” It then dives into the offering, which appears to be specific to each customer or account. In the example below, Verizon offered them a 15% monthly discount on their wireless plan on select phone lines for the next twelve months.

Another customer received a discount of $10/month per line on their 5 lines, saving them $120/line per year. Their email suggested that the discount would be applied automatically in 1 to 2 billing cycles. The timing for theirs couldn’t have been more perfect, as their previous loyalty discount had ended just days earlier.

We’ve documented the loyalty discounts of the past few years, almost all of which required a little trickery from customers to activate loyalty discount offers. For this round of offers, it’s almost as if Verizon realized how badly they messed up when they started yanking them at the end of the summer and trying to stem the losses. This is the most proactive I’ve seen Verizon discount.

For those hoping to see a similar email with this discount, I would check your inbox first before jumping into your MyVerizon app and looking for offers. If you get one without doing this trick, be sure to let us know.

Cheers Niek!
