Ferrari Team director Fred Vasseur says that a suspended upgrade introduced in Belgium can give a new step forward in the performance if it is further optimized at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ferrari had a new rear-wheel suspension for the Sprint weekend in Spa-Francorchamps, despite the limited practice time before Sprint qualified on Friday afternoon. After a stage for Charles Leclerc and a recovery from a Pitlane start to seventh for Lewis Hamilton, Vasseur says that bringing the new parts to Belgium brings the team into a better position for the Hungaroring this weekend.

“I think we should refine the situation,” said Vasseur. “It is never easy to introduce anything during a sprint weekend, but we did not want to postpone to Budapest.

“It is true that with the size of the weekend the fact that you do not do a long period on Friday – or do a long period of four laps – it is not easy to have references, and so on. But at the end I think it was the right call because it is also the best preparation for us. We will try everything to put together a little more on the weekend.”

Vasseur says that such an important mechanical upgrade is rarely one that offers an immediate improvement, in contrast to some aerodynamic additives that can add load without affecting the handling characteristics of the car.

“Certainly, you have a number of upgrades during the season in which it is fruits from round 1, and some others you have to refine and understand exactly the behavior, to understand the correlation with the brakes, riding height, etc.,” he said. “We are still in this process.

“If I had to choose, I would definitely have preferred Spa as a normal weekend and do a kind of slow introduction and do it step by step, but I don’t choose the calendar and I think it was ultimately the best choice to do it and also the best preparation on Budapest.”
