Van Dijk backs Szoboszlai to inherit Liverpool armband – Soccer News

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has backed Dominik Szoboszlai to manage the club in the future.

The 25-year-old midfielder signed for the Reds for the 2023/24 season, winning the Premier League title last season and reaching the EFL Cup final, where they lost to Newcastle United.

Although Arne Slot’s side have not performed at their usual level this season, with Liverpool in sixth place in the league and 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, Szoboszlai has had a strong individual season.

Across all competitions, the Hungary international has scored ten goals and registered seven assists in 35 appearances.

Only Hugo Ekitike (19 – 15 goals and four assists) has directly contributed to more goals for Liverpool this season, while Szoboszlai has also filled in as right back for the Reds.

With vice-captain Andrew Robertson set to leave following the expiry of his contract at the end of the season, Van Dijk was asked about the prospect of Szoboszlai captaining the club in the future.

The defender replied: “That’s all up to the manager, I guess. I don’t know. Yes.”

“Obviously he’s been very good. He’s also a player who I think can still take the next step as a leader of this team.”

“It starts with leading by example and that is something he has done so far this season.

“But also everything around it; there is still progress to be made and that is a good thing as far as I am concerned, so hopefully he will be very important at Liverpool in the coming years.”

Szoboszlai is reportedly in talks with the club about extending his current contract, which expires in the summer of 2028.

Real Madrid are rumored to be interested in acquiring the midfielder, although his agent Matyas Esterhazy said earlier this week that they were “not looking outside or anywhere else”.
