Van Dijk admits individual mistakes have cost Liverpool, but believes in Konate

Virgil van Dijk has shown his appreciation for Ibrahima Konate after a difficult season for the Frenchman, calling him a ‘fantastic defender’.

Konate has struggled more than most for Liverpool this season and has fallen well below the level he has set since arriving in 2021.

Fortunately, he has been noticeably better in the last two games, helping the Reds to consecutive clean sheets against Inter Milan and Brighton.

Speak with reporters After the 2-0 win over the Seagulls on Saturday, Van Dijk praised Konate and discussed their relationship on the pitch.

“Everyone at their best helps, everyone in the team. That’s why it’s a team sport,” said Van Dijk. “Ibou is a fantastic defender.

“It’s clear that if the team doesn’t perform as a collective, we can be exposed as the last line, and that has happened at times.

“Individual mistakes cost us, and sometimes myself too. Unfortunately, that’s part of the game. It’s about how you deal with it, how you react to it.”

“For example, I think Ibou has been particularly excellent in the last two games. He is working on things, as we all do.”

“He helps me, I help him and that’s how it should be. We’re not perfect. He wants the best for the club and I’m pretty sure that will definitely work out.”

Time for Konate to show he can lead Liverpool’s defence

Konate’s improved form has been much needed of late after some alarming performances amid links with a move to Real Madrid next summer.

It seems no coincidence that he has looked more focused since Madrid’s interest reportedly ended, with Arne Slot being “so happy” with him after the 1-0 win away to Inter last week.

Konate is out of contract at the end of this season, so the next few months are crucial when it comes to a contract extension.

If the 26-year-old stays, he must show he can be the future leader of Liverpool’s defense once 34-year-old Van Dijk is gone.

This season’s results show that much more consistency is needed, but he has done enough over the last four years to show that he can be a key figure for a long time.
