In a historic decision, 14-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been appointed as the vice-captain of Bihar for the upcoming 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season. The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) announced the team on Sunday, with Sakibul Gani as captain. This remarkable promotion makes Suryavanshi the youngest vice-captain in the history of the Ranji Trophy, adding yet another dimension to his already extraordinary cricketing journey.

Bihar’s new leadership setup

Bihar will begin their Ranji Trophy campaign in the Plate Group, opening against Arunachal Pradesh at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna from October 15, followed by a clash against Manipur in Nadiad. The team is aiming for a strong comeback this season after relegation to the Plate group last year.

Suryavanshi’s appointment as vice-captain reflects the team management’s confidence in his leadership qualities despite his young age. His experience in domestic and franchise cricket, along with his consistent performances, made him an obvious choice for the role.

A record breaking trip so far

Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his Ranji Trophy debut at just 12 years old during the 2023-2024 season, becoming the youngest player in the competition’s long history. Since then, he has continued to break records at every level of the game.

At the age of 13, he became the youngest cricketer to earn an IPL contract and signed with Rajasthan Royals. His breakthrough moment came earlier this year when he hit a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, becoming the youngest centurion in T20 history and registering the second-fastest century in IPL history.

He also represented the India U-19 team in bilateral series against England and Australia, where his aggressive batting style and calmness under pressure won praise from former cricketers and coaches alike.

The way forward

In Bihar’s first two matches, Suryavanshi will act as a deputy to skipper Sakibul Gani, adding youthful energy and tactical acuity to the squad. The Plate group this season consists of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Mizoram, giving Bihar a chance to rebuild momentum and fight for promotion to the elite group next year.

However, Suryavanshi may not see action for the entire Ranji season as he is also eligible for selection for India’s Under-19 World Cup squad, which will take place in Zimbabwe and Namibia early next year.

A star in the making

At just 14 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is rewriting records and redefining what is possible for young cricketers in India. His rise from Samastipur, Bihar, to vice-captain at the senior level shows not only immense talent but also maturity beyond his years. With the Ranji season just around the corner, all eyes will be on this teenage sensation as he continues his meteoric rise through Indian cricket.
