Manchester United have certainly made improvements this season.
Last season’s mess
The 2024/2025 season was a disaster of epic proportions as United finished 15th in the league.
It was their worst league result in the Premier League era as the club struggled to score or concede goals all season.
Progress
The club clearly still has problems this year, but there has certainly been an overall improvement.
United sit seventh in the table but are just one point off fourth and two points off third going into the November international break.
The club has recorded impressive victories over Chelsea, Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion this season.
Furthermore, they have also scored many more goals, as only Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have scored more in the league.
Usain Bolt responds
Nevertheless, the improvement has not pleased everyone and famous fan, Usain Bolt, has been left unimpressed by one key aspect of Ruben Amorim’s side.
The former Olympic champion continued speaking Rio Ferdinand presents and criticized the current state of the defense.
Commenting on the matter, he explained: “I just watched the United game. One of our biggest problems is when we put pressure on ourselves.”
He explained: “The first goal they scored against us was that guy’s Leny Yoro [Wilson Odobert] the back is turned. Instead of pressuring him so he would pass the ball back, he just turned and ran back into the defense.”
Bolt continued exasperatedly: “They always run back. All we do is press. Please, I’m begging you, man. Please go to the team and say something. You’re one of the best Manchester United defenders we had. Please, brother. It’s stressing me out. And I know you have nothing to do with this, but tell the boys to pass the ball faster. They pass the ball like… Oh my God. I’m sorry. I’m venting your heart, brother.”
Bolt also claimed that he believes Luke Shaw is the only defender at the club who understands the concept of one-on-one defending.
He ended with: “All they know is system, setting up and playing well. That’s all they know. They don’t know how to go a step further, push the defender a little bit, pass the ball back down and then you go back in your line.”
Although Ferdinand accepted his point, he disagreed with the claim that Matthijs de Ligt did not defend properly one-on-one.
The former United defender explained: “The defensive standout, Luke Shaw does it, but I think our best one to have done it this year is [Matthijs] De Ligt. De Ligt is really good at it, he has shown how the manager wants him to do it.”
The United legend also assured Bolt that the team is in a rebuilding phase and that they will eventually improve, but that the supporters must be patient with the squad.
