New York, USA, 27 August 2025 | Jackson Mansell

Twelve months ago, Alexei Pofyrin proved that he could take on any challenge.

Under Friday Night Lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Popyrin surprised four -time winner Novak Djokovic to reach the round of 16 in a major for the first time.

Pofyrin has previously produced the big surprise at Flushing Meadows, has every reasons to support his chances of adding the ruling champion for a second year to add when he then met Jannik Sinner.

It will be his third encounter against a World No. 1, confronted twice with Djokovic while he was the best player.

The 26-year-old believes that his best is good enough to match Sinner.

“If I play well, I play on my conditions, and if I can do that, I have the feeling that I can be in every game where I play, regardless of who I am,” Popyrin told Stan Sport.

Pofyrin was able to see himself play again during the night session in Arthur Ashe Stadium. De Wereld No. 36 played twice in the Timslot on Center Court, enjoyed the opportunity to compete against Sinner – which he defeated four years ago in their only earlier meeting in Madrid – under the same circumstances.

“It was an incredible atmosphere,” said Popyrin about playing Djokovic and Frances Tiafoe Back-to-Back on Arthur Ashe Stadium at US Open 2024. “I remember that the atmosphere is electric, and I think it is one of the loudest heads that you can get if there is an unbelievable point.

“I think [playing against Sinner during the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium] Become fun. I hope it’s a night game. It will be nice there if it is. I enjoy those moments. ”

Pofyrin is one of the five Australian men who will compete with Flushing Meadows in the second round.

Jordan Thompson, Alex de Minauraur, Adam Walton and Tristan Schoolkate will also fight for places on the third round, who won their opening games at Flushing Meadows.

Thompson starts the second round action of Australia when he faces Adrian Mannarino on Thursday morning (Aest). The World No.58 wants to build on his 6-4 head-to-head record against the Frenchman to reach the third round for the third time. Earlier this month he fell back in his first game in his first game from an injury in Cincinnati.

The Minaur continues to chase his first semifinal when he is fighting for the first time against the 22-year-old Japanese qualifying match and former junior no. 1 Shintaro Mochizuki.

In the meantime, Adam Walton and Tristan Schoolkate are looking to build on their underdog victories in the first round when they compete against Coleman Wong and Kazakhstan van Hong Kong and Kazakhstan respectively.

Walton beat the Hong Kong qualifying match earlier this year in Miami, while Schoolkate and Bublik have never played.
