All eyes were aimed at Draper’s top left when he first went to the singles court since a shock Wimbledon second round exit almost eight weeks ago.
The attention was not necessarily to evaluate his reinforced muscles, but to see if there were problems with the bruised humerus that recently disturbed him.
Draper did not play the recent ATP 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati to give themselves the time to recover, but participated in the renewed US Open Mixed Doubles competition last week to build sharpness.
On his return of Singles, Draper wore a compression rope – which offers support and comfort – on his difficult serving arm.
Draper insisted that he would not stop before the game, although his serving speeds were slightly slower than normal.
“I certainly had to curb my serve a little to keep the pain low,” he said.
“But at the same time I feel that my accuracy is almost a little better.”
An average of 111 km / h in the first set, which dropped to 108 MPH, 110 MPH and 106 MPH in the next three, indicated that he was not going to gas.
The precision of Draper’s Kick -Serve contributed to not being broken until the end of the second set – which he was going to win – and was again crucial when he dominated the fourth.
While his forehand winners were in the minority by Gomez’s own sizzling weapon, there were breath when he produced cruelty of that wing.
Flatter that hit that side in the fourth brought Draper more success when he collided a second round against the Zizou Bergs of Belgium-a other explosive, fearless opponent.
