Rayhan Thomas should have been to Omaha, Nebraska on Friday evening. Instead, the 25-year-old Korn Ferry Tour was back in Stillwater, Oklahoma, who had just completed the almost seven-hour ride home.
Thomas had hung up the club in Indian Creek all Thursday, waiting to see if he would gain access to the Pinnacle Bank Championship as an alternative.
That call was never wrong.
In what the Korn Ferry Tour calls an ‘unfortunate mistake’, MJ Daffue gained access to the penultimate event of the regular season of the KFT through an incorrect category. So, when Scott Gutschewski withdrew T-shirt for his first round, that opening was given to the first Runchhanapong Youprayong, the Thai Rookie that should have been inside. Thomas was the following on the alternative list behind Youprayong.
Monday q Info’s ryan french reported the story for the first timeAnd a spokesperson for KFT confirmed the human error to GolfChannel.com.
By missing the reduction at last month’s Barracuda championship, Daffue was unable to meet his non-exempt medical expansion on the PGA Tour. That is the moment when Daffue would be placed in the category of the KFTs Rower, together with the next 25 players and tires of Q-School and NRS. 2-10 of the PGA Tour Americas point list last year. But he was accidentally in the category encrypted for PGA Tour members who are not exempt for current PGA Tour events (Nos. 126-150).
In contrast to the administrative error of the LPGA in which Sophia Popov was involved earlier this year, when Popov had removed her points retroactively after playing in three events where she was not eligible, Daffue remained in the field and official points could be built up. The mistake can be enormously happy for Daffue, who is currently bound for the third and two shots of the management by 36 holes.
The KFT spokesperson, in a statement, added: “We communicated this situation with the player who has been hit and are working on a fair solution.”
That player is Thomas, who arrived on the track on Thursday, half an hour before the first Tee time. The morning wave passed with Thomas who was still waiting, and after a quick break of the meal he returned to the track until 2.20 pm when the last trio rudding.
When he was reached by telephone on Friday evening, Thomas said that he was shocked that his father had flown from Dubai to see him play, but he also expressed insight into the situation.
“The Tour tries to find a way to put the right, and I am sure that we will reach an agreement and find out,” Thomas told Golfchannel.com. “I am pretty sure that things will be made good. I think the Tour has good intentions. Of course they made a mistake and they were sorry.
“Now I am back in Oklahoma, try to prepare myself for Boise. In my head, regardless of MJ or not, I just didn’t play well enough to go into the field, so I have to play better, and hopefully Boise will be a good chance for me to go up the rankings.”
Every make-good by the KFT is likely to come after the season, when Thomas Stoltt will be what his status will be for next year.
Thomas, at number 107 in points that arrive this week, will easily arrive in the Albertsons Boise Open of next week, which fills its field based on the current classification. He will also be eligible for the first two Playoff events, which have fields of 156 players and 144 players respectively. The 120-man Compliance Solutions Championship in Owasso, Oklahoma, is still in doubt, because Thomas has missed 13 of 20 cutbacks in his Rookie season while placing only one top 10 finish, his T-7 at the second event of the year in BaMas.
The top 75 players in points after compliance will not only go to the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, but also earn the full KFT status for next season.
“That is priority to get into the top 75, and if we can make a really good run, maybe Top 20,” said Thomas. “But yes, reaching the final would be damn good … The year was not as good as I had hoped. It was a good start and that gave me a lot of confidence, but as the things progressed, I didn’t play so sharp and just not so neat with my game, and my scores showed that.
“But what I have seen can really help you a good week and you quickly move the ranking, so I am still quite optimistic about the rest of the season.”
