Sheffield United midfielder Jairo Riedewald’s performance against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon remained ‘under the radar’, say The Star reporter Danny Hall.
Sheffield United defeated their rivals 3-0 at Hillsborough Championship. Striker Tyrese Campbell scored twice against the Owls for SUFC, while Tom Cannon also got himself on the scoresheet.
Riedewald, 29, joined the Blades on a free transfer in October and penned a short-term deal at Bramall Lane. Since then he has performed six times under the direction of Chris Wilder.
Journalist Hall was impressed by his performance against Sheffield Wednesday and has given his verdict, according to a report from The star: “It may be going under the radar with (Tyrese) Campbell grabbing the headlines, but the former Palace man’s performance in the middle of the park was fantastic, especially early on before United took control. He was everywhere in midfield, so often he interrupted play and prevented the Owls from gaining any momentum, and played a key role in the goal as he won the ball back high from (Yan) Valery and fed (Callum) O’Hare.”
Sheffield United remain in the relegation zone after their first sixteen games, along with Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City. They are one point from safety behind Oxford United in 21st place.
Sheffield United latest over Jairo Riedewald
Sheffield United must make a decision on Riedewald’s immediate future in South Yorkshire. SUFC sees his contract expire in January and must decide where to keep him longer.
The ex-Dutch international first moved to England in 2017 to join Crystal Palace. Prior to his move to Selhurst Park, he came through Ajax’s academy and broke into the first team as a youngster.
Riedewald made 97 appearances for the Eagles in all competitions, scoring three goals. He left South London in 2024 and then moved to Belgium to join Royal Antwerp.
He went on to make 21 appearances for the Pro League club before cutting ties with him last summer. Sheffield United then jumped in for him last month and he has proven to be a smart addition to Wilder.
Jairo Riedewald stats
What about Sheffield United and Jairo Riedewald now?
Sheffield United will think about what to do next with Riedewald. Most signs point to SUFC extending its stay.
The Blades will be relieved to have beaten Sheffield Wednesday. Ultimately, they could have scored more against the Owls.
Wilder was reappointed in September after Ruben Selles’ disastrous tenure. It has been a difficult period for them so far and they will be hoping to find some form this winter and rise up the division.
Sheffield United are back in action on Wednesday evening and aim to make it two wins. They face a home game against Portsmouth.
Their upcoming opponents defeated Millwall 3-1 in their last outing and have risen to 19th place. The Blades then face an away game to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon to end November.
