Ugo Humbert talks about his ‘stupid injury and stupid decision to keep playing’

Ugo Humbert reveals he suffered a “stupid” injury in the spring and also admits his decision to play through it wasn’t the smartest.

After winning Marseille in February and taking part in the Double Sunshine the following month, the Frenchman played at the UTS Nimes in early April.

During the event launched by Patrick Mouratoglou, Humbert suffered a finger injury. After a check-up, the Frenchman was told that his finger was broken and he was advised to take a few weeks off. But the former world number 13 had no interest in sitting out the clay season and continued playing.

Humbert, who is left-handed, played with a splint and bandage on his right hand for the next two months. Needless to say, things didn’t go well for the 27-year-old, who went 2-5 during the clay swing.

“Yes, my season wasn’t easy. I mean, physically and mentally I had some stupid injuries during the season, so I didn’t feel 100 percent on the pitch. So it’s not a great feeling when you’re a player,” the world number 37 said. Express Sports.

Humbert on how his ‘stupid’ injury occurred: I slipped in the bathroom and heard my finger crack

‘If I explain [how I did it]I must be really stupid! But I was in the bathroom and there was water on the floor and I slipped and my finger caught something, the corner of something and I heard it like a big bang and I knew I knew it was something bad,” the seven-time ATP champion explained.

“In the end it was a stupid thing where my little finger was broken. During those two months it was difficult. I couldn’t do a single backhand.”

After a tough clay season, Humbert bounced back on the grass swing by reaching the semi-finals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Eastbourne. At the end of 2025, the Frenchman also finished second in Stockholm and enjoyed a semi-final in Basel.

In the same interview, Humbert claimed he would not make the same mistake twice and said he was well prepared for the start of the new season.
