Jack Della Maddalena’s short-lived UFC welterweight title came to an abrupt end at the hands of Islam Makhachev last weekend at UFC 322 in New York City. After five rounds, Makhachev walked away with Maddalena’s belt and a unanimous decision victory.
Maddalena looked visibly dejected between rounds during the UFC 322 main event. While Maddalena’s team tried to fire up their charges in the later rounds, Maddalena was unable to pick up the pace to retain his title.

On a recent episode of MMA Fighting’s The fighter versus the writerUFC veteran Matt Brown criticized the way Maddalena’s team handled turns between rounds at UFC 322.
“It seemed very strange to me like they were trying to fire him all the time,” Brown said of Maddalena.
“I told him he could be as excited as he wanted. If he doesn’t do something else, it won’t help. He fights really hard and grimaces the whole time. He’s squeezing as hard as he can and fighting as hard as he can against those submissions. The man gives everything he can. Telling him to give more isn’t going to help anything. If anything, tell him to relax a little.”
“One of the things I love about cornering is that it’s very difficult to stay in the moment,” Brown continued. “We always think about what happened in the last round. I think it’s a lot like golf. You don’t have to worry about where you just hit the ball. You have to worry about where you’re going to hit the ball next to get closer to the pin. When you’re sitting there thinking about your last shot, you’re just being yourself mentally.”
