Saturday’s UFC Houston card got off to a slow start, but once the main card hit, all cylinders were firing.
On a card with only five finishes, four Performance of the Night bonuses were awarded, with the main card awarding all four winners.
Among them was main event winner Sean Strickland, who had an excellent performance over two and a half rounds against Anthony Hernandez. The ending resulted in a knee, which ‘Fluffy’ responded to immediately. As he tried to recover, Strickland swarmed, unloading left and right and finishing with a pair of hits while Hernandez was on the ground.
The co-main event, which saw Uros Medic put Geoff Neal away with a lightning KO, produced another bonus winner. It took Medic a whopping one minute and 19 seconds to complete the job, perhaps the biggest victory of his career.
Melquizael Costa also earned a performance bonus, eliminating Dan Ige with a perfectly placed spinning back kick. And Jacobe Smith, who defeated Josiah Harrell, was the eventual winner of the Performance of the Night bonus.
According to UFC president and CEO Dana White, UFC Houston secured a $3.3 million U.S. gate, with 17,160 fans in attendance Saturday at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, a sellout.
All four bonus winners will earn $100,000 for their efforts. The remaining finish at UFC Houston, where Joselyne Edwards submitted Nora Cornolle (who suffered a shoulder injury after a slam takedown), carries a $25,000 finishing bonus. No Fight of the Night was awarded during the event.
