Houston – Former middleweight champion Sean Strickland called Houston a “fucking ghost town” on Wednesday ahead of his main event clash with Anthony Hernandez at UFC Houston.
Strickland (29-7) is looking to bounce back from a loss in his rematch with Dricus Du Plessis about a year ago. But as usual (and not entirely through his own doing), the talk during Wednesday’s media day wandered wildly into current events, including the Kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie and the upcoming UFC White House card.
When asked why people are so focused on Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, Strickland suggested it came down to fame.
“Well, she’s famous. You guys don’t understand, we’re better than you guys. It’s like I’m better than you guys. It’s like something happens to me – well I don’t, because people hate me, I’m the white one, right side, but you know, famous people are better than you guys. I’m sorry, it’s weird, man.”
“Again, you want people to give f*ck. Make it an attractive blonde girl, everyone gives f*ck. Everybody gives f*ck,” Strickland added, suggesting in other words that the same reaction wouldn’t come for a black kidnapping victim.
The information we receive is pre-packaged and passed on to you,” he added.
Then there was the announcement of Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano on Netflix.
“Oh fuck me dude. Ronda and Gina? Who thought about that? Are they going to be half naked? Well, I think they’re going to be half naked. Maybe it’ll get a little better. I don’t know, let’s face it, Ronda Rousey can fight, that bitch can fight, she’s a fucking Olympian. Weird fucking Olympian. I think she has a few fights with her ex, but that bitch can fight.”
As for Carano, who fought in Strikeforce, which Strickland noted as a promotion that came into action when he was 12: “Gina was always kind of bad, she was just hot.”
After almost completely dismissing fighting between women, Strickland suggested that he would be in prison if there were no women.
“If it wasn’t for p*ssy and MMA, guys, I’d be in jail. The only thing that kept me out of jail, I always say it was MMA, but no, there’s no women in jail. That’s why I didn’t go to jail, knowing I had to be surrounded by a bunch of f*cking dudes for 30 years? I don’t do those things.”
However, Strickland was eventually able to answer some fight-related questions. Looking to tackle a potential title contender with a win over Hernandez, Strickland admitted he wasn’t sure considering how inactive the champion has historically been.
“I don’t fucking know, dude. Here’s the thing: you want to see two terrorist Muslims [Khamzat Chimaev and top contender Nassourdine Imavov] fight each other? It’s more than likely that Chimaev will take Imavov down and just rough him up. No one cares that two foreigners are fighting. But the thing about Chimaev is: how inactive will he be?
“Let’s just say this fight does happen – when should it happen?” Sean Strickland then wondered.
When the White House was introduced, Strickland joked about bringing a terrorist into the White House. “I wouldn’t be surprised with this damn government.”
Referring to middleweight champion Chimaev’s ties to Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov, Strickland added: “He’s best friends with a goddamn warlord dictator who kills people. So yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if this administration puts goddamn terrorists on the White House card. I think I’d be the perfect person to fight him, the last real American in the UFC.”
