Paul and Joshua clashed at the Kaseya Center in Miami last Friday. Joshua was a huge betting favorite going into the fight, with many thinking he would dust Paul within the first two rounds. Although that didn’t end up happening, Paul did suffer the fate many expected of him, and by the end of the night he suffered a broken jaw.
In a new post on its YouTube channelDaniel Cormier said Paul’s loss to Joshua was always a foregone conclusion (h/t MMA Junkie).
“Some people believe in fairy tales,” Cormier said. “Whoever believed that Jake Paul would win, that was an absolute fairy tale. … There was never a world where Jake Paul would beat Anthony Joshua. It was always a matter of how the fight would end.”
Cormier admitted he’s glad Paul ultimately didn’t continue fighting, because he thinks it could have been worse for “El Gallo.”
“By the sixth round you could just tell this fight was over,” Cormier said. “You knew that Anthony Joshua was eventually going to land something that was going to hurt Jake Paul. … That right hand, oh my God. He took the whole right hand. You could see it in his face. He said, ‘Okay, now I understand boxing. Now I understand, at worst, what boxing can be,’ because he got hit by one of the greatest punchers, acclaimed, a lot of accolades, world heavyweight champion, and he went down and didn’t get up.
“And honestly, I was hoping he wouldn’t get up because it would only get worse.”
Paul’s boxing days aren’t over yet, but he’s taking some time off to recover from his jaw injury. “The Problem Child” will remain busy with Most Valuable Promotions, which has been praised for booking big women’s fights.
As for Joshua, a highly anticipated showdown with Tyson Fury could be on the horizon. Joshua has urged “The Gypsy King” to quit social media and sign up to fight him in 2026.
