Jon Anik does not feel that the change in calling UFC fights to boxing will be drastic.
Anik has been the play-by-play man of the UFC for several years. He has mentioned some of the biggest fights in MMA, but he will have the task of serving as a commentator for Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford on Saturday. It is a big moment for Anik, because Alvarez versus “Bud” is the biggest boxing match in recent memory.
Anik has previously been in important situations and is over with flag and pennant. During an appearance on MMA Junkie RadioThe UFC Play-by-Play Ace said that he will not be stripped version of himself when he was Alvarez vs. Crawford Belt.
“Stylistically, as a commentator, it will simply be more in the direction of the Old-School Boksfan,” said Anik. “I don’t want to reduce myself and suggest that I am just a man of meat and potatoes, but I dive into the f*cking preparation of these athletes. I am not trying to get a great one-liner (on the broadcast) that gets tick-tok’d in hell.”
Anik will be accompanied by Max Kellerman and International Boxing Hall of Famer Andre Ward at the Commentary Desk. Although you might think that the pressure could come to Anik, the experienced commentator remembered those who worry that he had previously been in similar situations.
“I certainly understand that there is a responsibility to sometimes serve a wider audience,” said Anik. “I was accused of that 14 years ago when the UFC signed at Fox, when the UFC signed at ESPN seven years ago – not necessarily dumbing, but … I’m just going to do my thing.”
Bewing opportunities currently have Alvarez as a slight favorite about the undefeated “Bud” Crawford, which makes a substantial jump in weight. Crawford is a challenge for the undisputed super middleweight championship.
