In the final finale of Road to UFC 4 at UFC 325 on Saturday, lightweights Sangwook Kim and Dom Mar Fan battled it out for a spot in the UFC.
What would have been four tournament finals was cut to three as flyweight Aaron Tau missed weight for his Road to UFC 4 fight.
Kim had an early fight in his wheelhouse, reached the gate and regained control after about 90 seconds. He took the back and they went to the ground but didn’t stay there. When we came back, it was Mar Fan landing an elbow, while Kim defended a takedown with a headlock. They turned, and then again.
In round two, Kim was able to get started in the clinch and found some success there. Back at range, things were a little more even, with Mar Fan finding a home for his jab. Kim was able to land his too, eventually ducking a punch and landing a single leg takedown. However, what seemed like a promising moment for Kim caused Mar Fan to reverse the position. They climbed to the cage, with Mar Fan getting a three-quarter position on Kim, who had his back against the fence. Kim was bloodied and seemed tired.
Mar Fan worked outside in the third, the pair trading strikes on the feet. More than once Mar Fan allowed himself to be put with his back against the fence; Kim started landing shots to the body about two minutes later, mixing in the odd strike above. However, he couldn’t overwhelm Mar Fan and they eventually worked their way back to the middle. A low blow to Kim then doubled the South Korean, and he collapsed near the fence as he recovered.
When they got back to work, there was a lot of back and forth action. The Road to UFC 4 Lightweight Finals produced the biggest difference, with Dom Mar Fan ultimately taking the unanimous decision.
