New York, NY – There was a little bit of revenge for Erin Blanchfield on Saturday at UFC 322 as she submitted Tracy Cortez in a women’s flyweight preliminary card fight.
The fight was a rematch of the pair’s 2019 meeting under the Invicta FC banner, when Blanchfield lost a close split decision. She left nothing to chance in the follow-up at Madison Square Garden in New York, finishing off a rear-naked choke in the second round.
Now Blanchfield has a shot at a title shot (Valentina Shevchenko would score a dominant decision over Weili Zhang later in the evening in the UFC 322 co-main event).
“I would like a title shot. Valetina and Weili fight tonight, I have a big finish on the same card. I think it just makes sense, I’ve been in the top five for a few years now,” Blanchfield (14-2) said after the win, speaking backstage to media outlets including Cageside Press. “I’ve had some big results. I think it makes sense.”
There are other contenders, including Natalia Silva. There is also the possibility that champion Shevchenko moves on to Kayla Harrison or Amanda Nunes.
“You never know. So many things are changing in MMA, who’s ready for it and when it might happen,” Blanchfield said on that front. “So I’m just ready for a title shot if it comes.”
Softly spoken, Erin Blanchfield isn’t one to make a lot of noise, but she isn’t worried about it holding back her title hopes. “I think if you win fights, things will come to you. So you just have to keep winning and be undeniable,” she suggested.
