Reigning champions, England continues with their title defense against Italy in the opening semi-final at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

England conquered Sweden in a chaotic penalty shootout to reach this phase after a comeback 2-2 draw, while Italy abandoned Norway with a late winner in the opening quarte final to secure their place.

Teams

England is not worried about a new injury problems to report after their dramatic quarter-final comeback victory on Sweden on penalties.

Leah Williamson was considered doubtful after she was replaced in extra time by an ankle problem, but the captain was seen with her teammates in the construction of this competition.

Italy has no worries for fresh injury or suspension to report after their victory over Norway.

When is the kick -off?

England stands for Italy in Stade de Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday 22 July at 9 p.m. CEST (20:00 UK Time), Live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.

Scale

  • England has lost each of their two earlier meetings against Italy at UEFA Women’s Euro with 2-1 results (L2), which in 1987 came to the third play-off placed in their opening group competition at the 2009 edition.
  • Italy came from behind to win each of their two earlier meetings against England at UEFA Women’s Euro
  • Under Sarina Wiegman and including penalty shootouts, England has only lost one of their last eight knockout matches at major tournaments (W5, D2, L1).
  • Italy has won only one of the four major knockout matches for tournament this century (W1, L3), which came in a 2-0 win over China in the round of 16 during the FIFA World Cup 2019.
  • England has only held one clean slate on this edition (W2, D1, L1).
  • Three of the five goals in Italy in this edition were scored by Cristiana Girelli.

Prediction

After their disastrous 70 minutes against Sweden to the replacements and marginal better penalties, somehow have recovered the victory of the literal jaws of defeat, England now has to complain and play with the same aggressive intensity that the Netherlands and Wales defeated in the group phase.

However, an advantage that the lion ribbons hold in Italy is experience in this phase of major tournaments because the Italians have not reached this phase since 1997, so that they are fearless to lose nothing, especially given their similar counter -attacking style as Sweden.

However, I expect that the lionesses will come through, because they ultimately have the better goals that, unlike Italy, who have been quite wasteful during the tournament, but the Italians will certainly learn from this experience that will hopefully benefit.

Prediction: England 2-1 Italy
