Troops arrest gunman after ambush on street
According to an Associated Press reportAccording to police, a lone gunman came around the corner at a subway entrance and immediately opened fire on a small security detail patrolling the area. Other troops rushed to the shots, tackled the attacker and held him until police arrived, after at least one Guard member exchanged gunfire with the gunman, officials said. The suspect was also shot and hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities said.
FBI director Kas Patel and direct current Mayor Muriel Bowser told AP that the two Guard members were in critical condition and called the incident a “targeted shooting.” Nearly 2,200 Guard troops are currently assigned to a joint task force in Washington.

Trump orders more troops and promises ‘steep price’
Trump, in Florida for Thanksgiving, sent another 500 Guard members to Washington after the attack, Defense Secretary said Piet Hegseth said. “The animal that shot these brave Guard members will pay a very high price,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, calling the troops “truly wonderful people.”
Vice President J.D. Vance urged Americans to pray for the wounded soldiers and called the shooting a reminder that “our soldiers are the sword and shield of the United States.”
Flights briefly interrupted at Reagan National
According to a separate report from Reuters, the Federal Aviation Administration said it had briefly paused arrivals at Reagan National because planes involved in the emergency response were operating near the flight paths to the airport. Normal activities resumed shortly afterwards. The disruption occurred during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, as TSA prepares to screen approximately 17.8 million passengers over the Thanksgiving holiday period.
