Super featherweight Shigetoshi Kotari and lightweight Hiromasa Urakawa, both 28, fought on the same map in the Korakuen -Hall of Tokyo on 2 August.

Both were later taken to the hospital where they experienced brain surgery.

Kotari, who fought against a tie after 12 rounds against colleague Jager Yamato Hata, lost consciousness shortly thereafter and “died at 22:59 on 8 August”, said his MT Boxing Gym on her website on Saturday.

“He did his best to make his way through the operation and treatment he had received in a hospital in Tokyo because of acute subdural hematoma,” said the post of the gym.

Urakawa was stopped in the eighth and final round against Yoji Saito and “Tragic collapsed in injuries during his fight”, said the World Boxing Organization (WBO) in an Instagram post on Sunday.

Urakawa died on Saturday evening, according to local media reports.

“This heartbreaking news comes only a few days after the death of Shigetoshi Kotari, who died of injuries in his fight on the same card,” said the WBO, and added: “Our deepest condolences to the families, friends and the Japanese boxing community.”
