Diaz is conservatively one of the top-five relievers in all of baseball – and there’s a case to be made for him being in the league’s top ninth reliever, given his durability and ability to strike out hitters.

Reports seem to indicate that the Mets offered slightly less money ($66 million) than the Dodgers ($69 million) with the same number of years (three).
Overall, the Mets fanbase is outraged to see their prized closer break, even with Devin Williams reportedly joining the team a few days ago. Notable New York reporter Mike Puma listed a number of reasons why Diaz could possibly have left Queens for the bright lights of Los Angeles.
In one of their classic attempts to rehabilitate a once-productive pitcher, the Dodgers signed Diaz’s younger brother Alexis to a contract midway through last year. Diaz appeared in just nine games for LA before spending time on the team’s Triple-A squad. Diaz eventually left and ended up in Atlanta.
Although the tenure was short, Diaz himself spoke very positively about his time with the team. Puma also noted that the now ex-Mets closer was none too happy with the team’s decision to get rid of pitching coach Jeremy Hefner. Hefner was with the Mets from 2020 to 2025 and has been on the Atlanta Braves staff since then.
There’s also a distinct possibility that Diaz wanted to play for a real threat to win the World Series. The Dodgers have proven to be the class of the league, with players often praising their professionalism and class.
Regardless of why he joined the team, Diaz’s mere presence in the bullpen makes the Dodgers a better team today than the team that won the World Series in seven games against the Toronto Blue Jays last year.
