US President Donald Trump has once again drawn the attention of his aggressive trade agenda in Canada with a new tariff threat.
In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney on Truth Social, Trump threatened a 35 percent rate on “Canadian products sent to the United States, regardless of all sectoral rates.”
“If, for whatever reason, you decide to increase your rates, then the number you choose to pick them up will be added to the 35 percent we charge,” adds the letter.
The new rate would take effect on 1 August.

The letter again refers to Fentanyl, who is reportedly ‘flows in’ the US from Canada, but also quotes other complaints, including trade shortages and Canadian delivery management in the dairy sector.

The new threat comes as Canada and the US is locked up in negotiations on a broader economic and security agreement, with a goal date of 21 July.
Canada already has to do with 25 percent American rates on steel and aluminum.

On Tuesday, Trump promised a new rate of 50 percent on buyer and 200 percent rate for pharmaceutical products. More than half of the copper export from Canada goes to the US.
Earlier on Thursday, Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly promised to ‘fight’ that rate.
In March, Trump imposed 25 percent rates at Canadian goods in March, but days later he achieved an important exception for export that meets the Canada-US-Mexico agreement.
