Trump spreads claim ‘Obamacare royalties’ on satirical website

President Donald Trump shared an image claiming that president Barak Obama receive royalties paid by the federal government for use of the word ‘Obama care.”

The unofficial name for insurance provided under the Affordable Care Act obviously doesn’t generate any royalty payments for Obama, but that didn’t stop Trump from sharing the unattributed claim with his 11 million followers on Truth Social.

“DOGE is halting annual $2.5 million payments to Barack Obama for ‘royalties tied to Obamacare,'” the post claimed. “Obama has collected this payment since 2010, for a total of $40 million in taxpayer dollars.”

The name “Obamacare” has not yet been trademarked at the time of writing.

The claim that Obama received royalties for the use of his name stems from an online publication called the Dunning-Kruger Times. The Dunning-Kruger effect is the tendency for people to overestimate their level of knowledge about a subject they know little about. The website’s About page makes it clear that the articles are not to be taken as fact.

“Everything on this website is fiction. It’s not a lie, and it’s not fake news because it’s not real. If you believe it’s real, you need to have your head examined,” they wrote. “Any similarity between the pure fantasy of this site and actual people, places and events is purely coincidental and all images should be considered altered and satirical.”

“Wow!” Trump wrotewhile sharing their Obamacare claims.
