Jets leave California winless after a disappointing 4-1 loss to the Ducks

After just one goal in the last 120 minutes of hockey, the Jets stayed one more night in California as they continue their season-long six-game western road trip in Anaheim tonight. The now 9-5-0 Jets took on the surprising 10-3-1 Ducks at Honda Center looking to leave California with a win. The Ducks might be the best surprise story yet, as even though they’ve had a few rebuilding seasons, it appears the roster is finally starting to look like a playoff team. The Jets, wearing their white away jerseys on the road, didn’t get off to the start they wanted, and now they’re 0-3-0 on this season-long six-game Western road trip.

Tonight’s Jets lineup was a little different as Cole Perfetti returned for his first regular season game. The 1st line remained unchanged, but the remaining lines were changed to make room for Perfetti. Cole Perfetti replaced Alex Iafallo on the 2nd line with Jonathan Toews and Vladislav Namestnikov. The third line featured Nino Niederreiter, Adam Lowry and Alex Iafallo. Parker Ford continues to center the fourth line, this time alongside Nikita Chibrikov and Tanner Pearson. Gustav Nyquist and Morgan Barron remain on the injury report.

The Jets’ defensive combinations remained the same as the previous game, while Dylan Samberg moves closer to his return. Eric Comrie got the start in goal as he looked to continue his strong play from his first three starts. Comrie came into tonight’s game with a 3-0-0 record, a 2.33 GAA and a .929 SV%. Tonight, Comrie was just good (she gave up a few goals that maybe shouldn’t have gone by), and it wasn’t good enough to give the Jets the win.

1st Period

The Ducks were the better team for most of the first 10 minutes of this game. Shots on goal were 5-2 Ducks at one point, and 7:18 into the game Beckett Sennecke scored his 5th of the season. The Ducks took the 1-0 lead after a few nice passes put Sennecke ahead.

That goal seemed to wake up the Jets, who weren’t off to the best start tonight. Just over a minute later, the Jets got their first power play of the night on a holding call from Ross Johnston. The Jets’ power play has struggled lately, and the struggles continued tonight. The top team had a few chances, but none were good enough to tie the game.

The Jets would get their second power play of the night more than 2 minutes after the first power play ended, but the result was the same and the game remained 1-0 Ducks. Logan Stanley was called for a rough play with just under 2 minutes left in the 1st, putting the Ducks on their first power play of the night. Midway through the power play, Chris Kreider and Troy Terry set up Leo Carlsson, who fired one from close range past Comrie.

Carlsson’s 9th of the season extended his personal point streak to 10 games and gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead on this power play. At the end of the first, the Ducks led 2-0, while the Jets led the way in shots on goal 9-8. The Jets couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities, including a nearly open net for Perfetti, where he pushed the puck just wide. Luckily for the Jets, there was still 40 minutes to play, but they had to find ways to score as quickly as possible.

2nd Period

The 2nd opened with good pace from both teams as they looked for the next important goal. It took a while, but the Jets finally scored their second goal of this six-game road trip. At 4:22, Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey set up Kyle Connor, who fired one on goal from the slot that took a slight deflection before getting past Lukas Dostal to make it a one-goal game.

LIGHTNING quick release ⚡️💨

The goal marked Kyle Connor’s 600th career NHL point, and it would hopefully lead to a Jets comeback in this game. Dylan DeMelo made a sharp call a minute later, but luckily the Jets’ penalty killers kept any momentum from suddenly shifting to the Ducks. Just when it looked like the Jets were fighting back in this game, the Ducks made it 3-1. Mason McTavish and Cutter Gauthier set up Beckett Sennecke and on the rebound he got just enough to punch it past Comrie and into the back of the net.

Less than a minute later, the Jets got their third power play of the night. There was a chance for the Jets to get right back into this game, but unfortunately it was another failed power play that fell to 0 for 3 on the night. Just two minutes after the power play ended, Cole Perfetti took a penalty, giving the Ducks their third power play of the night with just over three minutes left in the second. The Jets penalty was again sharp and after 40 minutes of play it was 3-1 Ducks, with the shots on goal 17-14 for the Ducks.

3rd Period

Haydn Fleury was called for a heel hit at 1:47 of the 3rd, giving the Ducks their 4th power play of the night. You knew at some point one of these teams would score again on the power play, and tonight it was the Ducks, who improved to 2 for 4 on the man advantage. Jackson Lacombe and Chris Kreider set up Leo Carlsson, and his shot had just enough to squeak through Comrie and into the back of the net to make it 4-1 Ducks.

Now down three, the Jets really needed something to get going quickly if they wanted to leave California with a point. A delay in the game call by the Ducks gave the Jets their 4th power play of the evening, but like what happened the rest of the evening, the 5 on 4 advantage did not lead to a Jets goal.

The remainder of this match went without goals or penalties (with a late goal from Cutter Gauthier then waved away for offside), and the Jets fell to the Ducks 4–1. The final shots on goal were 24-21 for the Jets, as they will now have to leave California at 0-3-0, winless midway through their season-long six-game road trip. Tonight the Jets showed some signs of improving, but some credit goes to the Ducks, who continue to excel early in this season. The Ducks’ young players are quickly showing the organization the talent that will be on this team now and for the foreseeable future.
