Trump says that Brics would end quickly if they ever form in a meaningful way

US President Donald Trump repeated his threat on Friday to hit a rate of 10 percent on the import of members of the BRICS group of developing countries and said that the group would end very quickly if they were ever formed in a meaningful way.

“When I heard about this group of Brics, six countries, in principle, I hit them very, very hard. And if they ever really form in a meaningful way, it will end very quickly,” Trump said without calling the countries. “We can never let anyone play with us.”

Trump also said that he was dedicated to maintaining the worldwide status of the dollar as a reserve currency and never promised to allow the establishment of a digital currency of the central bank in America.

Trump announced the new rate on July 6 and said it would apply to all countries that match what he called the “anti-American policy” of the BRICS group.

With forums such as the G7 and G20 groups of large economies that are impeded by divisions and the disruptive “America First” approach of the US president, the BRICS group presents itself as a refuge for multilateral diplomacy.

Since the issue of the threat, Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that the group was established to harm the United States and the role of the dollar as a reserve currency in the world.

BRICS leaders have rejected the claim that the group is anti-American.

Brazil in February is planning to insist on a common currency during his presidency this year, but the group promotes work on a cross -border payment system that is known as BRICS Pay that would facilitate trade and financial transactions in local currencies.

The BRICS group expanded last year outside of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa with members such as Iran and Indonesia. Leaders at the top of the group in Brazil expressed indirect criticism of US military and trade policy.

Trump has also specifically aimed at Brazil and has announced a rate percentage of 50 percent for imports, from August and a separate investigation into what Washington called the “unfair” commercial practices of Brazil.
