Trump has confidence in Fed candidate Warsh, despite possible obstacles in the Senate

President Donald Trump expressed confidence in his nominee for the next Federal Reserve chairman, Kevin Warsh, while noting that it would be inappropriate to question him directly about possible rate cuts. Trump indicated he believes Warsh is inclined to lower borrowing costs in line with the administration’s economic priorities, Reuters said in a report. The president also downplayed concerns about the Senate confirmation process, despite Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina indicating he might block any Federal Reserve nominee until an ongoing Justice Department investigation into current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is fully resolved. Tillis, who will not seek re-election in 2026, is a member of the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees Fed confirmations.

Because the committee has a slim 13-11 Republican majority, opposition from even one member could prevent the nomination from reaching the full Senate, where Republicans maintain just a slim three-vote lead, Reuters reported.

Trump emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the process and suggested that Warsh is expected to pursue a policy approach that is consistent with lowering interest rates and reflects the administration’s broader economic goals.
