Why it matters to City Hall.

Trump previously warned that he would cut federal aid if New Yorkers elected Mamdani. He supported the former governor Andreas Cuomowho acted as an independent.

After Mamdani’s victory, Trump predicted that residents would leave the city, the BBC adds.

Federal leverage could bite

The government has curtailed aid since the Oct. 1 shutdown, freezing $18 billion for major projects. New York needed about $8.5 billion last year, about 7% of its budget.

Those dollars cover housing, education, childcare and disaster relief.

City Obligations Squeeze Options

Some services are required by law, including shelter financing. Without federal support, the city and state must fill gaps, he said Sara Parker from the Independent Budget Office, BBC adds.

That pressure could lead to compromises between programs.

Courts could block attempts to withhold funds approved by Congress, it noted Justinus de Benedictis-Kessner from Harvard. “But it does slow down the process of getting those funds to the people who need them,” he says, the BBC adds.

Mamdani’s revenue plan faces Albany

He proposes to raise $10 billion by taxing the wealthiest individuals and corporations. This step requires approval from the governor Kathy Hochulwho has shown prudence during a tough campaign.

Trump ally Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) is seeking the Republican nomination for governor.

National Guard and police pressure

Trump has previously deployed troops in several Democratic-led cities. He hasn’t sent them to New York yet. But he “already has the template,” he said Julian Zelizer from Princeton. Mamdani indicated that he would challenge any stake in court.

New York’s policy limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

ICE has increased the number of arrests at immigration courts in the city. Mamdani pledged that the city would remain “a city of immigrants,” and promised resistance if enforcement escalates, the BBC reports.

‘Trump-proofing’ strategy emerges

The newly elected mayor plans to hire 200 more lawyers to challenge what he calls “presidential excesses.” Bob Shapiro of Columbia said he might also seek private sector allies to prevent troop deployments.

He could opt for targeted clashes that build support for priority programs.
