Trotters shine at the Melbourne Yearling Sale

The catalog for the 2026 Australian Pacing Gold Melbourne Yearling Sale, held at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, February 15, has been further expanded to include the 12-strong contingent of trotting bred youngsters up for auction.

The draft is led by three colts and two fillies from the first crop of the 2021 USA 2YO Trotting Colt of the Year King Of The North, a millionaire son of one of North America’s leading trotting stallions, Walner.

King Of The North was one of the success stories at this year’s US sales with 17 units for an average of $90,000 at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale and 39 units for an average of $62,000 at the Black Book Sale in Harrisburg.

A colt Kountry Win took the second top price at the second session of the Lexington sale for a staggering $425,000.

King Of The North’s Melbourne contingent includes a half-brother to Victoria Derby and Oaks winner Pink Galahs (lot 148), a colt from a Majestic Son half-sister to five-time Group 1 winner Aldebaran Zeus (lot 117), a colt from Melton winner Very Belle (lot 158) and fillies from the 2YO Trotting Filly of the Year Banglez 2020 (Lot 165) and Australasia’s first female trotter under 1:55, My Valerie NZ (Lot 123).

Majestic Son, the leading Australian trotting stallion for the past ten seasons, and EL Titan, this year second on the list of North American two-year-old stallions based on average earnings per foal, are both dually represented.

The sire of Dominion Handicap winner Gus, Majestic Son, has a pair of royally bred colts in Lot 131, whose dam is a Ready Cash half-sister to the dam of NZ Young Guns winner We Can Have It All, and Lot 136, a half-brother to the clever trotter Scootin Around and a member of the same family as Maori Time, Maori Law and so on.

EL Titan, a $700,000 winning son of Muscle Hill from the dam family of Andover Hall and Angus Hall, is represented by a half-brother to Vicbred champions Kyvalley Clichy and Needabacardi as Lot 118 and a half-sister to three group winners in Pretty Majestic, Kinvara Sue and Rave On Hall (Lot 134).

Trixton, the progenitor of reigning Inter Dominion champion Arcee Phoenix, has a single entry at the auction in Lot 112, a filly closely related to Group 3 winner Down Under Earl and from the family of Maori’s Idol, Noopy Kiosk and Keayang Zahara.

Another son of Muscle Hill, What The Hill, a leading sire of trotters in both New Zealand and Australia, is represented by a colt out of a sister to the $90,000 Allwood’s Sunbeam and Outpunch Enchanter (Lot 111).

The square-gaited consignment is completed by Lot 137, a colt by leading percentage sire Used To Me out of the Cup-winning mare Prettylilangeleyes, a half-sister to five winners, including Group 3 winner Tendaho.

The trotting yearlings and non-sale entries are all eligible for the Australian Pacing Gold Trotters Graduate Series with a $40,000 final for two-year-olds in 2027 and a $30,000 final for three-year-olds in 2028.
