After the move, Hamara resigned from Freddie Mac’s board of directors, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission (Sec) submission.

Under the Trump administration, the boards of the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) have undergone several leadership changes. In his first week as FHFA director, Pulte immediately made waves by removing 14 board members across Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, adding new ones and appointing himself chairman of both boards. Hamara was one of the new members added to Freddie Mac.

A Fannie Mae board member with ties to Elon Musk’s business ventures and the American Doge service – named as a replacement – left the board just a day later.

Hamara’s appointment signals a push to strengthen the housing sector amid persistent housing shortages. Housing inventory hit an all-time low in 2022 But has increased this year, giving buyers more options. HousingThe latest housing market tracker, which uses weekly data, shows the national inventory for existing homes rose to 863,972 homes last week.

“In my opinion, it’s going to take someone with a deep understanding of home building to get home building back. Like the president said we need to build again, and Brandon will just help us!,” Pulte added to X.

President Trump has called on the GSEs to encourage new housing construction. In a post on Truth Social On Sunday, he described homebuilders as “friends” and “very important to the success of our country.”

“But now they can get financing and they have to start building houses. They are sitting on 2 million empty lots, a record. I’m asking Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to get big home builders going and in doing so help restore the American dream!”

It’s not clear how the GSEs can create more incentive for homebuilders. They offer various construction products to support lenders and home buyers, not builders.
