Trey Murphy III is insisting on caution to the oversights of the summer competition

The NBA Summer League has wrapped, and for the second consecutive year the New Orleans Pelicans ended without a victory in Las Vegas. Despite the fact that he had two projected 2025 Loterijpluks, the team went 0–5 and joined the Orlando Magic as the only Windless Squadrons this year.

Murphy recently appeared on the Young man and the three Podcast with Tommy Alter and Jabari Smith. He discussed why the results of the summer competition should not be taken too seriously, especially when evaluating young talent.
“My first summer competition, I played pretty well, I was the first team All-Summer League,” said Murphy. “But it clearly didn’t matter because I had a good game until February of the following year … I played a great summer competition and did not play well for another 50 games then. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mean anything.”

Insight into the context
Murphy pointed out that teams of the summer League have minimal time to prepare. Roosters are quickly assembled and players usually only get a few exercises before they play competitive games for a period of 10 days.
“I feel that many people try to draw conclusions and make reviews about children in the summer competition and it’s just too early,” he said.
The challenge for the Pelicans was real. Derik Queen appeared in just three games due to an injury, and Jeremiah feared only 18.2% of three, while he had an average of five turnover per match.
Murphy’s own trip
In 2022, Murphy had an average of 26.5 points, 7 rebounds and 2.5 steals in just two summer competition matches while shot 50% out of the field. Despite that implementation, he did not score double digits in a competition for a regular season until his 37th performance. His true outbreak came in Game 47, when he dropped 32 points against the Hornets.
Now Murphy is a nuclear part of the rotation of the Pelicans. Last season he had an average of 21.2 points per game before an injury sidelined him. This summer the team rewarded him with a four -year contract of $ 112 million that this will start next season.
