Before 19,601 strong in the United Center, the Chicago Sky was looking for exchange when they took the Indiana fever.
Repayment of the nearly 40-point loss they suffered on Thursday against the Seattle Storm. Some still expected a demoralizing loss, since those who were not on the floor. Angel Reese was out because of back problems. Ariel Atkins was out with a leg injury. Hailey van Lith was out with an ankle injury. All in all, there were five players out. Michaela OnyenWere was available to play with a knee injury after Thursday.
In the meantime, Caitlin Clark was still out for the fever. But they maintained their core of Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston, Sydney Colson, Sophie Cunningham and Natasha Howard.
The air jumped to a 5-0 lead to start the game. But shortly thereafter, the fever took over the first quarter under the leadership of the exploits of Mitchell, who would wear the team on her back for her entire game. After the first quarter, the air was 26-13 behind and had nine turnover to their name, a consistent problem for the team throughout the season. The fever has capitalized by scoring 14 points of that turnover.
Heaven began to regroup itself in the second quarter and managed to return to the game. They did this by converting on good shoots, hitting the free throw line, scoring inside and shooting from the 3-point line. In particular, it was Rachel Banham, Rebecca Allen and Kia nurse who made those shots from outside the bow. Kamilla Cardoso did the dirty work in the paint.
As a result, the air was at half with 51-39 after the second quarter competing at 26-25.
In the third quarter the air began to reclaim the momentum. They went on a 13-5 point and at one point behind only 56-55 thanks to a large sweater from Maddy Westbeld. But there was no stopping the fever when Mitchell and the company regained the momentum and after three-quarters of 75-61. Although the air went to a 10-2 point in the mid-fourth quarter, it was not enough because the fever sealed the victory, 93-78.
Mitchell led all scorers with 35 points. Boston and Makayla Timeson each scored 14 points.
However, the sky was cheerful in the defeat, satisfied with the efforts they put into it. In total they have turned the ball more than 20 times, but they surpassed the fever 40 percent to 37.9 percent on 3-Pointers, a major breakthrough for a team struggling in that category.
Much of that success on long distance was powered by Banham, which ended with a season high of 26 points, marked by six 3-Pointers. Although she turned the ball seven times, she handed out five assists and was a perfect 4-out-4 from the free world-length. In general, Banham shot 53.5 percent and 54.5 percent of the 3-point line. All added three own 3-PINTERS and ended with 13 points and four assists. Nurse also contributed enormously with 14 points, as well as six rebounds.
On the inside the air trusted Cardoso and Elizabeth Williams. Cardoso’s bravery was clear when she got away with her third consecutive Double-Double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. She was also a perfect 4-out-4 out of the fault line. Williams was a go-to-person to score consistently, causing the team in the field target to led at 66.7 percent; She ended with nine points and eight rebounds.
Another dimension of the game on which the air had to trust was their endurance, especially considering how thin their selection is. As the nurse explained after the competition, the level of competition in the Wnba makes the preservation of energy a luxury, saying:
You cannot save energy. You have no choice in a WNBA game, and therefore for us, [that is] Much of them. I think we use that zone a bit to try to force them to play later in the shot clock. It is clear that this is a team that likes to get out and overrests and plays. I believe we have won the fastbreak points. We have done 15 to 11. So we also like to go out in transition and run.
But I think it is a matter of it for us a strategic game. You have to use your time outs. You must use the stopping to play well and give yourself the opportunity to catch your breath. But at the end of the day it is a mental game. Your body gets tired, regardless of how many minutes you play every night. The mentally you can stay more connected to not make much of those mistakes that just come from fatigue, the better. I thought we did very well to respond to everyone today, and have that mental resilience, knowing that you would come through at some point, and that you would suck wind at some point.
