Townsend’s China Food Critique attracts fire: xenophobic, ignorant, disrespectful? | Women’s Tennis Blog

Taylor Townsend is again central to controversy, this time for comments about Chinese cuisine while he competes on the Billie Jean King Cup in Shenzhen. The American Doubles World No. 1 shared her disgust on various local dishes On Instagram, recognized accusations of lack of respect and cultural insensitivity. Hello everyone, I just wanted to come here and apologize from the bottom of my heart. I understand that I am as privileged as a professional athlete to be able to travel all over the world and experience cultural differences, what is one of the things that I love so much about what I do.

I have had nothing but the most amazing experience and time here at the tournament, and everyone has been so friendly and so graceful. The things I said were not representative of that at all, and I just really wanted to apologize.

There is no excuse, there are no words … I will be better. I am really, really grateful for my country and to be able to represent and be better. That’s all I can do. I just really apologize.

On Thursday in Shenzhen, the United States team starts its quarterfinals against Kazakhstan when pursuing a record-expanding 19th Billie Jean King Cup Crown.
