Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen to sign Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke. TEAMtalk.
The 25-year-old moved from Eredivisie club NAC Breda to the AMEX Stadium in 2020. Initially he was unable to break into the first-team squad and was loaned out a few times to play regularly and develop his career.

However, he has now established himself as an undisputed starter in Fabian Hurzeler’s starting line-up, starting all fourteen Premier League matches so far this season. He has scored three goals, including a midweek brace against Aston Villa, and has helped his side keep three clean sheets.
After showing his qualities in the Premier League, Van Hecke has secured his place in Ronald Koeman’s Dutch national team squad.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Tottenham are planning to revamp the squad next year under the supervision of sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange and that the purchase of a new centre-back is on their agenda.
Spurs have shown interest in Van Hecke after closely monitoring his performances. They wanted him last summer and are still keen to sign him.
However, buying the defender won’t be easy for the North London club as Brighton always play hardball to sell their star players.
From Hecke to Tottenham
The player has entered the final 19 months of his current contract and the Seagulls want to retain him by tying him down to a new term. However, if Hurzeler’s side are ultimately forced to cash in on him next year, they could demand around Ā£40m.
Van Hecke, who is 1.80 meters tall, is a technically gifted player and plays extremely comfortably from the back. Moreover, he has an aggressive character and has the necessary qualities to flourish at the highest level.
The Lilywhites currently have Micky Van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin as centre-backs. However, the Romanian has been out in recent months with a serious knee injury.
Therefore, signing a new centre-back would be the right decision for Tottenham, and Van Hecke could be a smart signing if they were to buy him.
However, it will be interesting to see whether the north London club will ultimately make a concrete move to secure his services in January or next summer.
