At Topgolf Oberhausen, more than 250,000 balls fly every day and the experience is simply unique in Germany. I wanted to see for myself why the hype is so big – and yes, it is addictive!

Topgolf Oberhausen is a huge golf event location

At first I thought: Topgolf Oberhausen – is this more of a driving range or an amusement park?” And in the end, it was exactly this mixture that mattered. I was there with a female companion who had never played golf before. Basically just with the idea of hitting a few balls and seeing why every second golfer in the Ruhr area mentions this thing. Spoiler: You don’t just stand at a mat and sleep all night – you play games, collect points, get immediate feedback and notice quite quickly that you are suddenly playing much more focused on goals than on a classic series.

The setting makes the difference: multiple floors, protected from the weather, heated – and that entertainment atmosphere with music, screens and food right on the bay. At first it sounds like an ‘event location’, but as a golfer you will find a surprising number of moments that feel like meaningful training. Especially if you set yourself a few challenges: hitting zones, length control, rhythm.

In this report I will tell you what Topgolf Oberhausen feels like from a golfer’s perspective, what is really fun, what you need to know (prices/reservations/timing) – and how you can use your visit so that it is more than just an evening of “hitting balls”.

What is Topgolf – and why is it so much fun?

Topgolf is available in more than 100 locations worldwide, but Oberhausen is the first in Germany and will open in January 2022. It’s not just the score that counts here, but also the fun.

Imagine a driving range where you don’t just hit balls, but rather hit targets and get points for doing so. Depending on the game, distance, accuracy and tactics count – and the whole thing is built so that even complete beginners can have fun straight away. The system itself communicates this Everyone’s Game principle very clearly.

The points do not come with a finger: every ball is tracked and the hits are automatically entered into the system.

The facility: 3 floors, 102 bays, 365 days of play

The venue is not only large, but also consistently designed for comfort: heated and weather-protected bays (so you can play relaxed even in the rain/winter) and different levels with different viewing angles on the goal field.

Then there are the extras: restaurant-bar concept, terraces and a 34 m² screen for live sports (ideal if you want to combine golf with a sports evening – watching football for example). And yes: it is really a recreational complex – not just an offer.

Topgolf is strongly aimed at groups – with function rooms/spaces and capacities up to very large events depending on the area. If you want to go with your club, a tour group or colleagues: there are special group/business pages and packages.

The complex is located in the immediate vicinity of the Westfield Centro (Neue Mitte) and is therefore ideal for a half-day trip to the Ruhr area (shopping center/restaurant/cinema next door).

Technology: why scoring is so accurate

In short: RFID in the ball. Topgolf describes the system as follows: each ball has a chip and the area works with a large number of chips/readers to accurately assign hits.

This is practical for you as a golfer because:

  • you get immediate feedback (hit zone/distance depending on the game),
  • you can play challenges (e.g. “how many balls in zone X?”),
  • you approach the training in a playful way (instead of 70 punches straight ahead).

Games and format: signature game and virtual courses

1) The signature game: Topgolf

Here you collect points as you hit targets – and depending on the distance/accuracy you get more points. Sounds simple, but it quickly becomes addictive as you automatically work on length control and aiming.

2) Angry Birds: addictive entry-level game

One of the most famous games at Topgolf Oberhausen is ‘Angry Birds’ – and it really is as simple and beginner-friendly as it is entertaining: the trajectory of your real golf ball is digitally displayed as an Angry Bird, and you try to clear the pigs with as few strokes as possible. The goal is to eliminate all the pigs with just three hits. Whoever has the highest score after three levels wins.

3) Virtual courses

If you want more of a golfing atmosphere, there are virtual round formats where you can play well-known courses (depending on your setup) – e.g. the Old Course at St Andrews or Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Prices: How much does Topgolf Oberhausen cost?

Topgolf prices are per bay and hour (not per person), a bay can accommodate up to 6 people – and the first visit includes a one-off Global Lifetime Membership for €6.

Prices also depend on the time of day: the earlier you come, the cheaper it is. On weekdays you pay between €30 and €45 per hour/bay. On weekends and public holidays it costs between €50 and €60 per hour/bay.

Tip for calculating: If there are six of you, the Bay costs + membership are very well distributed – in small groups it is logically more expensive per person.

Make a reservation or go spontaneously? Avoid waiting time frustration

Topgolf also keeps Bays free for spontaneous visitors, but depending on the day it can get busy.
The location calls Thursday evening, Saturday/Sunday during the day and Friday and Saturday evenings classics with waiting time potential.

If you want to play golf-oriented (quieter, more focused), the morning and early afternoon are usually more relaxed.

Golf training on site: If you want more than just games

If you also want to use Topgolf for training, there are bookable training formats (individuals, pairs/threes, groups) and even licensing/course options.
Also there are sample prices on the page, stating that the units are in a bay and the bay is included in the price.

7 tips to really use Topgolf as a golfer

  1. Warm up as before the round: 10-15 balls easy pace.
  2. Goal instead of distance: Focus on 1-2 zones per game.
  3. Driver only when you need him: Topgolf tempts you to “full send”, but wood/hybrid/iron often does more for the score.
  4. Wedge Challenge: 50/70/90 (or similar distances) – count the number of hits.
  5. Routines: Same pre-shot, same orientation – even if it’s just for fun.
  6. Mix playing partners: One for goals, one for routine/pace – brings structure.
  7. Mach’s social, airplane slots: 90 minutes is often perfect, better 2 hours with a group.

Conclusion: Is Topgolf worth it?

If you like golf but don’t always want to train classically, Topgolf is a pretty smart mix: Topgolf gives the old game new life A. You get purposeful play, ball flight feel and repetitions – just with an entertainment factor. And if you’re with non-golfers, this is one of the few places where everyone at the table can actually have fun without having to explain yourself all the time.
