While equity benchmarks briefly tracked Asian peers’ gains on stronger-than-expected U.S. growth data, losses in information technology stocks and continued foreign fund outflows continued to edge higher, keeping the holiday-shortened session within range despite resilient domestic fundamentals.
Sensex traded flat at 85,522.17 after opening at 85,533.11, while the previous close was at 85,524.84. During today’s session, the price rose to a high of 85,738.18.
Nifty 50 rose 14.80 points or 0.06 percent to 26,191.95 at 12:50 pm and rose to an intraday high of 26,236.40.
The small cap index rose 0.54 percent, while the midcap index rose 0.08 percent. Sector performance showed a mixed trend. IT, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas experienced maximum selling pressure, while metals, media, real estate and auto were among the indices trading with modest gains.
Top Gainers and Losers of Nifty 50 Intraday
Among the Nifty 50 stocks, Hindalco, Shriram Finance, Apollo Hospitals, Trent and Max Healthcare led the gainers, while Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Wipro, Sun Pharma, InterGlobe Aviation and Reliance Industries fell the most.
IT stocks fell as investor sentiment was dented by concerns over changes to the H-1B visa program, with the Trump administration replacing the random lottery system with a process that prioritizes higher-skilled and higher-paid applicants, potentially impacting Indian IT companies’ hiring flexibility and costs.
Mphasis, Wipro, Coforge and Persistent Systems fell more than 1 percent.
Market size remained mixed, with 3,107 stocks trading on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing, with 1,561 advancing, 1,419 declining, and 127 unchanged.
On the broader market front, 81 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 34 stocks fell to their 52-week lows. Meanwhile, buying interest was evident in select counters, with 62 stocks hitting the upper circuit while 29 stocks were stuck in the lower circuit.
Midcap and smallcap movers
Among the midcap basket, Bharat Dynamics, Indus Towers, National Aluminum, 360 One WAM, NTPC Green and Muthoot Finance rose 2-4 per cent, while Ashok Leyland, BSE Ltd, Mphasis, Coforge, Astral and Glenmark fell 1-2 per cent.
Smallcap stocks JBM Auto, Hindustan Copper and Manappuram Finance rose 6-10 percent. IIFL, Gillette and Nuvama rose 3-4 percent. On the other hand, Kajaria Ceramics, Cyient, Neuland Lab, Bandhan Bank and Gland Pharma fell 1-3 percent.
On the BSE, VIP Industries and Websol Energy rose 12 to 14 percent, while HCC, Avanti Feeds and Strides Pharma fell up to 4 percent.
