Babatunte Oladotun has spent so much of his life playing a grade or two in basketball that the 16-year-old cannot remember time to play against children in his own class.
“Dad let me play for two years in kindergarten,” he exclaimed, ripping his father, Ibrahim, who was sitting next to his son on their ride to a Nike’s Skills Camp in Los Angeles.
It’s true. And therefore, says Ibrahim, nobody should be surprised by Baba’s reclassification Earlier this month from the class from 2027 to the 2026 class, which means that the NBA Hopeful will enter the university a year earlier than originally planned. The top player 2027 player by both 247sports and ESPN, the Maryland High Schooler is now moving in the number 5 in front of the 2026 class, behind number 1 Tyran Stokes, one of the most budget players in the country.
Baba’s relocation is not surprisingly considering his personal bow – he played this summer in the 17 -hour team of Team Durant and has a birthday of December – or the current climate.
Reclassification has become a trend for the hoops in the university in recent years. Remember that Cooper Flagg again classified from 2026 to 2025 before Baba, Duke led to the last four as a real first -year student and was then drawn up by the Dallas Mavericks no. 1 in June. (Flagg’s twin brother Ace has not reclassified and will be a first -year student at the University of Maine this fall.) In October, BYU guard AJ Dybantsa, originally a Star -Rekruut from 2026, will make his college Hoops debut after re -classification of 2025. ESPN.COMwill participate in the reclassification movement.
But what is surprising is the reason for the family for their decision.
“Baba is not Cooper Flagg,” he said about his 6-foot-10, 195-pound son. “They are two different players, their bodies are completely different. This was about protecting an active one.”
Ibrahim, a Nigerian resident who played Junior College Ball in Pensacola, FLA. Transfer to Virginia Tech And playing for the hokies of 1989-91, does not want people to think that his son is haunting someone.
When making the choice, the family incorporated how many bodies of wear of the top perspectives after years of taking on the basic circuit. In addition to club basketball in the spring and July, players usually spend June with their high school teams. Some of the best prospects also do Stints with Team USA at various mini-camps and FIBA youth events, which contributes to the toll on their bodies.
“The largest floating factor (in this decision) was, he is an asset, how do we protect that active? A four-year-old college is not only about zero-it is everything you can eat, access to strength and conditioning, elite medical and health care,” Ibrahim explained. “It is more an insurance policy.”
Herclassification has long been a trend in the University Football, especially with Quarterbacks, although one of the top recipients, Ethan “Boobie” Feest van Powerhouse Desoto (Texas) High School, recently classified again before he committed himself in South California in July. In College Hoops it is a newer whim. The thinking is that the sooner a top perspective comes to the university, the sooner he can rake in zero money, go to the NBA and ultimately sign a second NBA contract, that someone can set up financially for life (Rookies drawn up in the first round sign a contract based on their draft position and bound to the Rookie; second contract;
The introduction of NIL has drastically changed the landscape of college sports, and agents who work with university athletes are not surprised when top perspectives choose to catapult themselves in the university earlier. An agent, who got anonymity in exchange for his frankness, said: “In general, I think you’re going to see it more and more. If you feel that you are ready and can earn (zero) now, why not?
“Now, is it a smart decision? That is a different conversation. The most valuable thing you can do as a first -year student is playing, and if you are not playing well because you are not ready, that will harm you for the next three years.”
Ibrahim and Baba insist that money did not play a role in Baba’s decision to accelerate his graduation of Blake High School in clumsy, Maryland, just north of DC Ibrahim, said that at least one big university coach told the family: “Baba could now play College to put themselves under pressure. Among other things, he has dozens of offers from top programs, including Gonzaga, Kansas and Kentucky.

Academic, after a few years of summer school, Baba was already on schedule to graduate early. This summer he took the 11th grade English and was often “reading and writing papers between practices and games,” said Ibrahim. “When we were on the west coast, he got up at 5 o’clock to take an 8 -hour test back to the east.” He is planning to take pre-calculus this fall and wants to study business marketing or finance at the university.
They also push back on the idea that this is just a trick to get to the professionals faster.
“I don’t want him to be labeled as” one and done “before he even goes to university,” said Ibrahim. “I don’t think children should be labeled like that. You go to school in school for a good development. We try not to push him to do something, to go to the NBA, nothing like that. And zero was the last thing in our minds; it is clear with the territory in this day, but it is not at all why we did it.”
Ibrahim said he and Baba “talk to agents and train ourselves, but we don’t do anything because they say we have to.”
Baba is comfortable with the move because he is already so familiar with the class of 2026, who played against it for years on the club circuit and in Elite Kampen.
“Mentally, it’s like I’m going back to my original class,” he said. “I atmosphere and chill with those (2026) boys all the time. Only until Covid did I really play with my (figure) level. My father always played me to challenge me, and I had never really come out of the mentality of 2026. I am excited, not timid, about the challenges of college basketball.
Ibrahim and Baba estimate that when he goes to university, it is feasible to add another 15-20 pound muscles to its wire-like frame. Arriving has been a focus: he has set up more than 20 pounds since last summer. Ibrahim, who is 6-foot-8 1/2, thinks it is possible that his son can grow an inch or two, but thinks it would be in his hull because “his legs have been for longer than some 7-legs, his legs have been done!” (Both Ibrahim and Baba also reluctantly admit that Baba’s mother, Dessiate, who is only 5-foot-3 is not an advantage.)
As a member of Team Durant, Baba spent time with the namesake of his team, and his long, lanky frame is reminiscent of the 15-Star and four-time Olympianus. On the club circuit, many current and former NBA -striking teams that are named after them have, usually the result of a financial sponsorship of the Pro. Some, such as Chris Paul and Bradley Beal, serve as assistant coaches. Others, such as Carmelo Anthony, are relentlessly ruthless the court and cheering – and heckle refs.
Durant coaches the team that is named after him, but Baba said he is in the neighborhood and that he has learned much more from Durant than just how he can emulate his hesitation, two-dribble pull-up. To be honest, Durant spoke about the discipline and focus that is needed to have a Pro career that includes almost two decades. He also recorded Baba that the big ones “always try to learn from other players and always continue to develop their play,” said Baba.
Playing helps to achieve that. And there is one area that has to improve Baba: his ability to beat Ibrahim one-on-one.
“He is not used to playing to my level,” Ibrahim taunts, and Baba’s eye roll could be heard practically over the phone.
“He doesn’t respect my dirty calls,” said Baba.
“I don’t have to respect error calls from a 16-year-old,” Ibrahim prevented. However, he knows that there will be a switch.
“If he can play to my level,” said Ibrahim. “I will retire.”
